MONDAYS: All the World's a Stage: Exploring the Art of Theatre with Blake Waters
The show must go on… but how? This course will explore the process of bringing a play to life, from script to stage. We’ll delve into the various aspects of theatre, including performance, set and costume design, lighting, sound, and more. Along the way, we’ll uncover the rich history of theatre and the many creative roles that contribute to a successful production. Whether you're a theatre lover or simply curious, this course offers a behind-the-scenes look at the art of theatre-making.
TUESDAYS: Behind the Baton - Understanding the Great Orchestral Works with Ethan Lolley
*Please note: The first Behind the Baton class will meet on October 15, 2024!
In "Behind the Baton," students will explore iconic orchestral compositions and the visionary composers who created them, examining key works by masters like Beethoven, Brahms, Stravinsky, and Mahler. This course blends lectures, listening sessions, and interactive discussions to investigate the historical contexts, stylistic innovations, and emotional depth of these pieces. Encore participants will gain insights into the creative processes that shaped the music, the role of the conductor, and the relationship between instrumentation and composition. By the end, students will develop a richer appreciation for orchestral music and the narratives within the scores, enhancing their enjoyment and understanding of these timeless masterpieces.
WEDNESDAYS: Great American Composers and Lyricists with Joey Clark
Join Joey for a closer look into the lives and music of some of America’s most impactful composers and lyricists. We will span the genres taking a deeper dive into the lives of well known writers and a surprising look at some of our most successful ones who you may have never heard of before. From Henry Mancini to Loretta Lynn to Smokey Robinson to the husband and wife team, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, it will be quite the journey through American music! Singing involved!
THURSDAYS: Building Your Voice with Jacquelynne Fontaine-Isaac
Join Encore conductor Jacquelynne Fontaine-Isaac as she leads you through accessible and engaging vocal workouts designed to help you build your voice no matter where you are on your journey as a singer. Throughout this 10-week course you’ll learn valuable vocal warm-up techniques, tips for building vocal stamina, exercises to help you extend your range, and best practices for keeping your voice healthy and growing into the new year! No lecture - all singing!
FRIDAYS: Creative Writing - You've Got a Story to Tell! with Dr. Katy D'Angelo
In this introductory Creative Writing class, students will explore ways to mine personal history and memory as the basis for creative work. In this class, the subject of your writing will be your life and your own stories. Each week, Dr. Katy D’Angelo will introduce new techniques and approaches to help you find and refine pieces rooted in your experience. This type of writing, often called creative nonfiction, is based in personal narrative, but also takes on other elements of great storytelling, from the descriptive quality of your writing to the shape of your narrative structure. If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to reflect on the stories of your life, join us for this collaborative workshop!
